Imagine a golf ball hitting your home at 40mph. Now imagine multiple golf balls pelting your home again and again—that’s what it’s like during an Oklahoma hail storm. Storms can cause significant damage to your home, especially to your roof. It’s important to have your roof inspected after a severe storm, and have any repairs completed as soon as possible.
How To Identify Hail Damage
If you have a metal roof, the damage may be quite obvious. Hailstones can leave significant dents in the metal, making your roof appear pocked and dimpled. Damage on shingled roofs might not be as easily noticeable and may require a closer inspection. Look for these three key signs:
- Bruising: Just like a metal roof, asphalt shingles can be dented and dimpled from hail damage. Indentations feel a bit like bruised fruit and will shorten the lifespan of your shingles.
- Missing granules: Asphalt shingles are made up of three layers—backing, a layer of asphalt, and a top layer of granules. The granules give your roof its color, as well as its energy-efficient properties. Hail loosens up these granules and rain washes them away, leaving the asphalt layer exposed. If your shingles look unusually black, or it looks like someone dumped coffee grounds in your downspout, then you’re missing some granules.
- Circular cracking: Large hail can cause shingles to crack, leaving your roof vulnerable to further water damage. Cracks can look like half- or full-circle shapes, and some cracks may even cause pieces of shingle to fall off of your roof.
Why You Should Have Your Roof Inspected After A Storm
It can be tempting to put off having your roof repaired, especially if you are not experiencing any leaks. However, hail damage can significantly shorten the lifespan of your roof, causing bigger problems down the road. Storm damage is often covered by insurance, but many adjusters require a licensed roofer to conduct an inspection.
